We are off to a Great start with our summer festival mojo and I’m confident we will learn and grow with each show. We are really excited to be at Thursdays on First for the first time. Look for us June 22, July20 and August 17 at this cherished celebration of summer in Rochester. Check out the awesome interactive map on the TOF web site to find your favorite local businesses and exactly when and where to find them; pretty high tech. I believe everyone at the Great Soap Company would do a no rain dance to keep the rain away for our dip into outdoor venues. Please join us at Berne Wood-Fired Pizza Artisan Market on August 2. Jon and I have never experienced this Wednesday evening summer tradition but we’ve heard the buzz. All the profits from this completely volunteer operated event go to nonprofit causes in the community. A summer evening with music, pizza, and friends in beautiful southern Minnesota and giving back to the community, that’s priceless.
TOF August 17 will be our summer finale.
We’ll kick things off in the fall at the Olmsted County Fair Grounds September 22 & 23. Weathered & Rusty Market always offers unique items for creative minds. A great variety of really nice vendors in the old limestone building give this show a really great vibe.
Ask about our newest products when you stop by our tent. We are excited for you to see the additions we’ve made to our display. The Great Soap Company is geared up to keep you clean and fresh this summer.

Jon and I recently connected with some old friends with whom we had lost touch. We had the pleasure of meeting their daughter. She is beautiful, charming and funny, much like her mother. When the lovely young woman smelled our ‘straight up patchouli’ soap she was transported to her grandmother’s living room and a fond memory of grandma rubbing her back. When she described the vivid memory to us my heart was filled with joy. Our simple bar of natural soap invoked safety and comfort and memories of her grandmother. Coincidentally, the first soap I ever made many years ago, reminded my brother Jeff of our grandma Austin. I called it ‘sunshine state patchouli’; it was scented with patchouli & orange essential oil with dried orange peel. For Jeff the soap conjured memories of a salve grandma used for cuts he acquired having grand adventures on their farm in Lanesboro.
I’m not a huge fan of lavender and we did not have any lavender soap in our line until a customer told me how the scent reminded her of her grandmother who she missed very much. I decided if I was going to make lavender soap, it has to be very special and the massage bar was born. Our massage bar begins with a layer of tapioca pearls to gently massage your skin followed by a layer of soap and poppy seeds to exfoliate and ends with a colored layer of smooth creamy soap; this special soap is a labor of love. ‘lavender fields’ is scented with a combination of lavender, bergamot and clary sage essential oils (all said to reduce anxiety) The scent has become so popular that we now make it in a regular 4 and 2 oz bar.
Chocolate chip cookies baking in the oven remind me of my awesome grandma Swiggum. I don’t think I’ll be making ‘chocolate chip cookie’ soap any time soon. Do any of our eleven scents hold a memory for you? We would love to hear how the scents of our products make you feel.

Once again I am pampering my art investment with The Great Soap Company’s Hiker bar. This tattoo left me very swollen and a little bruised but it seems to be healing nicely. The slippery hiker bar feels great on my tender skin. I put a rubber glove on to wash the fresh ink every 2-3 hours pat it dry with a paper towel and apply a thin even layer of aquafour. It is important to me to take good care of my new art work and I believe in our natural product to do an excellent job of keeping it clean. My new tattoo inspired me to update our inventory at Autonomy Tattoo and body piercing, you can now pick up some of our latest and Greatest products there! Autonomy is conveniently located between Taco Bell and DQ on Broadway in Rochester.
We are busy finding new ingredients to use in our products and we're cooking up a beer soap and some holiday favorites for you this fall. As always we are looking to keep it local so you might find Jon and me around town sampling, beers, ales and stouts. You will certainly find us at the rusty iron ranch festival on September 12 & 13th and we are working on lining up shows every month through the end of the year! Find dates and locations right here and on Facebook Instagram and Pinterest!
When the book arrived I was excited to start reading it. The author had carefully put all of her unique thoughts, ideas and memories into encyclopedic form. It was a unique and interesting way to document the ordinary, it was light and entertaining but nothing really grabbed me until I got to the C's.
The word was Change and in the book Amy talked about what she did with her change. Once a week for a year she took some change and placed it an envelope with a note and a postcard. The note said that the money was for the finder and to do whatever they wanted with it, and the addressed and stamped postcard was there if they wanted to share what they did with it. (Amy's actual note was lovely and you will have to check out her book to read what it said.)
I rarely have extra money after bills are paid, cars are fueled up (and or) repaired and food is bought. I tend to have a great sense of guilt and sadness when I have to tell 'Richard' calling for the fire fighters fund that I can't help the children of those brave servants who perished in the line of duty. I know that generosity is good for the soul. It makes sense to me when I see very successful people being charitable with their money and they speak of how it sustains them to share their wealth. How can I give when I feel like I never have quite enough? How can I be generous when I struggle to get by?
Amy's idea was the perfect way for me to be generous. I found 8 post cards, some were freebies from the SPAM Museum in Austin, Minnesota and a few lovely art print post cards from a friend and I addressed them each:
Lisa
Box 613
Rochester, MN 55903
I penned a note that went something like this:
"This $ was left here intentionally to change your day. Enclosed is a post card if you want to share how you spent it."
Eight times.
I went to Hunts card and gift and acquired 8 lonely greeting card envelopes (which they sold me for 10 cents each) and a book of post card stamps. I gathered all the change and one dollar bill from my purse, divided it into 8 piles and the 'Change Project' began. It wasn't very much money just over a dollar in each envelope but I was excited thinking of places to leave them. I wrote:
For you
On each envelope
I left them all over Rochester. I left one at the Minneapolis airport when my sister, Kathy and I went to stay with Brittany in Florida. I brought 4 envelopes with us to the sunshine state. One was left in a changing room where my lovely sister, Brittany, a radiation therapist, treats her patients. I had such a great time with my sisters in Florida that I forgot all about the project until we were waiting for our flight to return to Minnesota. Three envelopes were left at the airport in Ft. Meyers. It's probably not very wise to leave envelopes labeled 'for you' lying about in airports in today's world (a sad state of affairs) but it was change not anthrax. Not to cause harm but happiness. So I let go of that fear and took a chance and I'm glad I did.
The first post card I got back was BP Livingston's from Michigan. He said that he thought it was a nice idea and included his email. So I emailed BP and it turns out he was the pilot who flew Kathy and I back to Minnesota. It was pretty cool that someone as busy as Breck took the time to write that he would pass the change on to someone else on the postcard and pop it in the mailbox. The next postcard also came from Michigan, from 14 year old Marissa, who picked up an envelope at the airport because her "curiosity got the best of her". The postcard was simply not enough space for Marissa to tell me what was on her mind so she placed it in envelope with her finished letter. Marissa still had money left from her Florida get away which she was going to save for college and decided to add the one dollar bill to her savings! Marissa said that she was going to leave a dollar for someone one day too.
I have only gotten those two cards (so far). The project inspired my sister Kathy to do the same; she has left two envelopes in Rochester and my brother Jeff said that he wants to do it too. Amy said in her book that she was surprised every time a postcard arrived in her PO Box and equally surprised when they didn’t. This project has made me feel really good and I'm going to keep leaving change about. Maybe it will inspire someone to be generous in their own way. Perhaps they can afford to share more than pocket change, or maybe all they can share is a smile. This project has confirmed for me that kindness grows, no matter how small the gesture. I hope that this story inspires you to be kind to a stranger without expecting anything in return (even a postcard).

Except one, Maud the ACID box was MIA and couldn't be accounted for. I was perplexed, and I was convinced that Maud had been lifted at one of our shows. I hid her haunting image on our web site catalog and hoped she would find her way back to us. I was very excited when Jon handed me a dusty Maud box. If my memory served me better I would have recalled whisking Maud off a shelf for Zoe to fill with sample sniffing bars to share with her co-workers at Daube's bakery. Maud may have been forgotten in the trunk of Zoe’s Chevy serendipitously. Maybe the spirit of Maud watched over and protected Zoe during her accident which totaled the Cavalier and left my youngest daughter with a concussion. Zoe has fully recovered and is driving again. Luckily Maud was discovered in the trunk of the demolished vehicle, unharmed from the unfortunate incident, just before Dillon’s salvage towed her away. So you see, Maud’s journey has been a tumultuous one. I was coveting this lovely box once again so I didn't ‘unhide’ her in our store.
It became clear to me however, where Maud’s journey should end when I read this post on the Great Soap Company’s face book page. I met Lizzi about 30 years ago. Lizzi is a gifted writer and a busy mom, She home schools her three children and is a small business owner. I have always admired Lizzi’s creativity and it’s been awesome re-connecting with her after so many years. I am quite admittedly passionate about our product and I am convinced that it can add value to our customer’s lives. Because I am so passionate about adding value to people’s lives and the quality of our product Lizzi’s story really touched my heart. It was evident to me that Maud would be welcomed and loved in the little red house of ADHD. So I loaded up Maud the ACID box with our family friendly Gin & Tonic. This round is on us, nobody gets drunk and everyone ends up clean and smelling great! We thought it would be a nice way to thank Lizzi for sharing her family’s story (we can’t have her clan fighting over soap after all) and to raise awareness of this form of autism which affects a growing number of families. To find out more about Asperger Syndrome and how you can help visit autism speaks. Since Locke is so fond of the slippery soap I am excited to give him our newest product to try. Jon has created a super slippery shaving soap. Bentonite clay makes this puck of soap slippery, also scented with Gin & Tonic. This puckin soap is sure to be a hit with Locke. (that inappropriate little pun was for you Lizzi) I have been washing my hair with the Gin & Tonic shaving puck and I really dig it. Look for Gin & Tonic soaps in our catalog soon! Thanks again for the awesome words you shared about how The Great Soap Company added value to your family – we are sure Maud was destined to be with you on her journey.
BIG HUGS.

The Great Soap Company makes natural, handmade soap in small batches, the old fashioned way. When the lye interacts with the vegetable oils it creates glycerin naturally. Glycerin has a superb moisturizing effect on the skin and is a natural bi product of the process. Right before our soap is poured into our handmade molds we add essential oils and occasionally fragrance oils to fashion our fabulous scent combinations. Our natural soap will leave your skin and hair feeling clean and soft without any additives or preservatives to dry and irritate your skin.
The Great Soap Company is committed to bringing you a high quality product at an exceptional value. We will never take out the natural, moisturizing glycerin or add chemicals. Our goal is to create a Great working, natural product, a product that your whole family can feel good about using to get clean! Make the natural choice and choose the Great Soap Company.

Yesterday Jon, Zoe and I celebrated our nephews, Ben and Blaine’s High School graduations with family at my sister’s place in Oronoco. We have seen a great deal of rain in southern Minnesota recently, the past 60 days or so… so it was so fabulous to see sunshine for the festivities. The sun also shone on Adorn {Furniture Rehab} shop owner Melissa Wood’s wedding day! Congratulations Melissa and Tony we are so happy the sun made an appearance on your very special day! We got home from the party to find a package all the way from Connecticut! The Great Soap Company Founder, Sandra Pike McShane made a beautiful stepping stone featuring our logo. Sandra is one crafty bitch and these fabulous stepping stones are her latest creative venture!
Sandra sent a nice letter confessing her addiction to Morning Dew and shared excellent soap reviews from her friends who got gift baskets (including Great soap) for Christmas! We adore your thoughtful gift and are happy you love our soap as much as we do!
While I was getting soap ready to ship to Connecticut I put together a gift box for a benefit auction next weekend. I choose an image of a vintage Indian motorcycle on a lovely wooden cigar box and loaded it with an awesome selection of Great Soap. My little brother Greg and his girlfriend Jennifer are collecting items for the ride away SMA silent auction next Saturday. Thanks Greg and Jennifer for raising awareness and money for this cause and honoring the memory of a precious little girl taken much too soon. Check out fsma.org to find out how you can help.
The Great Soap Company is excited for warmer weather and a little sunshine would be awesome. We're having fun working on new products for you. We used local fresh goats milk in our soap and scented it with cut grass fragrance oil, the interesting combination is currently curing. find out how it turns out right here on our blog. Have a fun, safe summer!

I’m feeling a little stiff and sore from a workout with Jenny Green at the DAHLC on Thursday. The first session kicked my butt, hope it’s a little easier when I do it on my own tomorrow. It’s time for me to get up and move. I’m off to prepare baby soap molds for a batch of bouncing baby soap Zoe is making presently. Then I will responsibly wrap up some soap for Autonomy. The Great Soap Company is very proud of our responsible packaging practices. Save us to your favorites and keep an eye on the catalog for our new lotion sticks and sassy new soap boxes… stay tuned.

I’m sad I missed my brother’s grand opening at Minnesota Joe’s yesterday. I’m glad Jeff Austin, Todd Fox and Troy Meisner are sharing their passion and knowledge in the lovely town of Spring Valley. I think they are really helping breathe new life into this rural community. Beautiful southern Minnesota is certainly an awesome backdrop for this great shop. You can get great outdoor gear at Minnesota Joe’s and I heard they are making room for tents – which is a great reminder that spring is just around the corner! So take a road trip to Spring Valley and check out this great little shop right next to Ray’s Barbershop, pick up some Great Soap while you’re there! Minnesota Joe’s is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday - Congratulations Minnesota Joe’s, Spring Valley Minnesota is lucky to have you!
I got some good feedback from a couple of my skin experts and have made a great change to the lotion stick recipe. I am mixing up some lotion sticks today and collaborating with my most excellent graphic designer Long Haired Lori to design some lovely new labels for this awesome product. Look for lotion sticks in our catalog very soon! Like us on Facebook for updates on our newest products!

It’s sure nice to have a weekend to work on brilliant ideas. Yesterday I whipped up some lotion sticks! We are super excited to bring you this great new product and it is en-route to our favorite skin experts for the stamp of approval! As soon as we get several thumbs up you will find it right here in our catalog! The lotion stick is completely natural. The unique balance of oils and beeswax soaks into your skin leaving it soft and touchable. I think it puts a nice polish on my old ink too.
I seized this rainy Sunday to try a new scent I have been
thinking about. I made our cocoa butter soap recipe (Chocoholics Revenge)
scented it with vanilla and a hint of tangerine and for a earthy surprise I put
chunks of Straight Up Patchouli in there too. I can’t wait to uncover it – I think
it will be a nice blend of sweet and earthy, and chocoholic’s revenge lather is
always awesome! Keep in mind that freshly poured soap is not soap until it has
cured for 4-6 weeks. So save us to your favorites to keep up with our expanding
product line!
We have nearly completed a display case for Autonomy Tattoo and
body piercing – find out here when The Great Soap Company soap is available in
Rochester at Autonomy!

I got another kick ass Brian Grover tattoo on Monday. Jon gave me an Autonomy Tattoo gift certificate for Christmas. Thankfully, I scheduled a January 21st appointment last August. Worth the wait, I assure you. I love this tattoo! The colors pop and the lines are super solid – it hurt like a bitch, also worth the pain. Brian is an interesting cat to talk to, thank god because it distracts you from the discomfort. I have a great deal of respect for this talented local artist and am so glad that most of my right arm is covered with his work. This time he did a fly reel and flower Mandala inside the state of MN. Brian’s got some great ideas to finish a ¾ sleeve. Maybe he can disguise my stretch marks. This bright, lovely new blessing is the perfect time to tell you about tattoo after care. Always ask your tattoo artist what they recommend for aftercare. I like to use Hiker bar on my fresh ink. This soap is made with a relatively large percentage of castor oil which has both conditioning and moisturizing qualities. The Avocado and apricot kernel oils contain vitamins A, D and E which are healing and moisturizing. The cocoa butter olive oil and beeswax contribute to the hardness of the bar, contain antioxidants and give this soap that great slippery feel, which feels pretty awesome on fresh ink. I might love this soap more than my tattoo (no offense Brian). I'm all about pampering my art investment and Hiker bar totally fits the bill. The Great Soap Company’s Hiker bar is also awesome shampoo, it gets your hair squeaky clean and contains no chemicals or preservatives, it's all natural. The guys at autonomy encourage you to leave the bandage on until you want to start dealing with the after care. My bandages typically don’t last long as I always have to show someone ASAP. Try to resist the urge to take off your banddage though, everything I have read indicates that you should leave it covered for at least 2 hours. I like to keep mine clean with Hiker bar and wash it every 2-3 hours. I wet the new tattoo with warm water, work up a good lather in my hands, gently wash, rinse and repeat (use your hand, no washclothes allowed) and gently pat it dry with a paper towel. I apply Aquaphor (a Eucerin product) with a rubber glove and am able to use a very small amount to create a thin even layer. I carry around my little tattoo pampering pouch for about 4-5 days and then just switch over to lotion instead of Aquaphor. Hiker bar is scented with some power packed essential oils too. Tea tree oil is anti-bacterial and antiseptic and Clary sage, peppermint and rosemary are super clean and refreshing. I highly recommend this awesome product to care for fresh ink investments. I saw Brian Thursday and he said my tattoo is healing beautifully.

Last March my brother and co-owner of Minnesota Joe’s, Jeff Austin, had his tired tiger tattoo covered up with a gorgeous white tiger at Autonomy Tattoo & body piercing. It’s easier not to focus on the pain of getting a tattoo when someone is with you, I think, personally. So, I asked Jeff if I could tag along. While Brian Grover was using his mad tattoo gun skills we got to talking about the then just established Great Soap Company. We had started producing our soap and were building an inventory but had not thought of a logo for our company. Brian suggested I find inspiration from some pages of an old book of script lettering and he allowed me to bring the pages home. The gifted artist Mr. Grover was correct and I came up with a sketch which got two thumbs up from Jon and Zoe. We were jazzed to have a company logo that we all loved. We knew we had a great idea and I knew exactly who could execute it perfectly. Geek artist, Lori Reynolds has been my friend for over 30 years and I knew that Lori could work her Mac magic to create the perfect logo for The Great Soap Company. Lori didn’t stop there, she created beautiful graphics for our web site, business cards and our fabulous soap labels. Affectionately referred to as Long Haired Lori by the Janet family (as not to be confused with Short Haired Lori) this GSC founder has gone above and beyond to help the Great Soap Company. I am so grateful that Lori is still such an important part of my life after all these years. I admire Lori’s confidence, she has never seemed afraid to be her wonderful unique self. This creative, positive, strong, independent woman has been an excellent example for my daughters and I am so proud to be her friend. Thank you for all your help with The Great Soap Company and thank you for adding so much value to all of our lives. We love you Long Haired Lori!

2012 was quite a year. In March 2012 The Great Soap Company was established, we are so proud of our product and thrilled to share it with you. GSC soap is available on our new web site (with a pick up option for locals), Adourn {furniture rehab}in Chatfield and Minnesota Joe’s in Spring Valley. We are excited to bring you more awesome products in 2013. Save us to your favorites and check back often to find out where you can pick up Great Soap.
In 2012 some folks I love experienced several life changing events. Most recently, my little brother lost two of his best friends. In light of all that has happened in the past year, (I typically resolve not to resolve...due to my rebellious nature) in 2013 I resolve to be mindfully grateful for all my gifts. I will spend more time with family and make sure they always know how much they are loved. Life is fleeting and I want to leave nothing unsaid. That being said, for my first official blog post on our new web site I want to share how grateful I am for my sister and member of The GSC Founders club, Kathy Akerson. We could not bring you this awesome product without the help of Katie. She has been a cornerstone in starting The GSC and an endless source of cut wax paper and brown paper bands. I am grateful for the time we spend together creating beautiful soap boxes and cutting circles out of cellophane. We used to pull each other’s hair out and I am so grateful that now in our 40’s we are laughing our asses off waddling with the ducks in her yard instead. Cheers to Katie – for making this Company so awesome and for being such an important part of who I am. I love you and I really can’t thank you enough for the joy you add to my life.
